One of the things I love about veggie burgers is that they come in a variety of forms. Different combinations of ingredients, such as beans, lentils, sweet potatoes, rice, and even nuts, can create a uniquely delicious veggie patty.
For this recipe, I used green lentils, brown rice, and walnuts to make a hearty and delicious veggie burger.
This veggie burger is also packed with the flavors of spices such as chili powder and smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and liquid smoke, which give it some BBQ vibes.
Enjoy these burgers on a bun with your favorite toppings, such as avocado, pickles, tomato, lettuce, and a yummy sauce!

Servings: 8 burgers
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups Green/Brown Lentils (cooked at home or from a can), rinsed and drained
- 1 cup Cooked Brown Rice
- 1/2 cup Walnuts, very finely chopped
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil (or another oil will work as well)
- 1/2 large White Onion, finely diced
- 1 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce (if you are vegan, make sure there are no anchovies)
- 1/2 tbsp Liquid Smoke
- 3 tbsp Tomato Paste
- 1/2 tbsp Chili Powder
- 1/2 tbsp Smoked Paprika
- 1/2 tsp Cumin
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
- 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
- 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper (optional)
- 2 tbsp Coconut Sugar or Brown Sugar
- 3/4 – 1 1/4 cups Panko Bread Crumbs (use gluten-free breadcrumbs, if needed!)
- Buns and Toppings for Serving!
Instructions
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the diced onion. Sauté for about 5 minutes, until golden-brown.
- To a large bowl, add the lentils, brown rice, finely chopped walnuts, cooked onion, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, tomato paste, spices, sugar, and 3/4 cup of the breadcrumbs.
- Mash these all together, using your hands if needed, until well-combined. It may be too wet, so continue to add more breadcrumbs until it is workable. You want the mixture to be moist, but not too wet that you cannot form it into patties.
- Form the mixture into patties that are about ½ inch thick, using approximately 1/3 cup at a time. Set these on a baking sheet or a plate. Allow them to chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
- Heat a griddle, cast iron, or non-stick pan over medium heat with some cooking oil, if needed. Once hot, add the patty. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side. Once finished, serve on buns with your favorite toppings!
